Well known for its role in energy production, coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is an enzyme with vitamin-like activity that’s naturally produced in the body. Although there are two types of CoQ10 (ubiquinone and ubiquinol), ubiquinol is the body-ready and most active form, and has the added benefit of being a powerful antioxidant. Whilst tissue CoQ10 levels naturally peak at age 21, they decline with age thereafter, unless it is consumed regularly. Since the richest food sources, organ meats, are rarely consumed nowadays, the diet tends to provide only around 10% of our requirements. To obtain an effective daily dose of around 100mg ubiquinol, you’d have to consume around 2-3kg of beef liver!
